Travel Experience

The Old Theatre Inn is a registered heritage property originally built as a theatre temple in 1780 and later used as a village school. In 2008 the Swiss Govt. funded restoration of the original theatre temple building as part of the Shaxi Restoration Project, which eventually included the entire area of Sideng Square. In 2012, an American designer partnered with the local teacher to make the rooms more comfortable and market them to international travelers. They renamed the property Old Theatre Inn. In its renovated classrooms, it now offers five luxurious guestrooms with slate stone bathrooms, rain shower, down pillows, solar hot water radiant heated walls and antique tribal embroidery art. The Inn features a large courtyard around the theatre temple which is still in use as a traditional music performance stage. Guests can enjoy our local style meals prepared by staff from the village, dining in our upstairs restaurant (the Dancing Mule) or on our terrace with sweeping views overlooking the Shaxi Valley. Located in scenic Duan Village just 3km from Shaxi Old Town and steps to the Hei Hui River, the Old Theatre Inn is the perfect place from which to hike into the nearby mountains on dozens of trails. Around the Inn you will find quaint villages, endless emerald rice and barley fields and country roads that are perfect for walking or riding on our mountain bikes. The Old Theatre Inn employs only local people and follows strict sustainability practices, including not using any disposable products on the property. We are proud to be a TripAdvisor Traveler's Choice Award winner for the past six years.

Responsibility

Old Theatre Inn has done extensive work in preserving the buildings and traditions of this unique property. We improved many aspects of the old buildings, including better fire protection, soundproofing, structural upgrades and lighting. The staff are all from the local village and we serve foods from either their fields or the Shaxi Friday Market. We also sponsor the traditional music ensemble, comprised of elderly men from the village to come and perform regularly. We recycle all waste, use environmentally friendly cleaning products, low-wattage bulbs and zeor disposable or single-use items.

Business Case

We began this project as a way to employ local people, promote Shaxi as a destination and showcase the heritage of the property. We have been in operation for 8 years but financially we are only modestly successful. Our website has improved visibility of the area to foreign visitors and our business philosophy have attracted feature articles in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, South China Morning Post and Travel & Leisure.
