Travel Experience

Sampan Travel is a tour operator organizing tailor-made journeys in Myanmar. Through their broad network they create hand-crafted, intimate itineraries that show the country’s diversity. These itineraries incorporate authentic, local experiences that aim to support the well-being of host communities while limiting negative impacts. Sampan’s journeys aim to tell the enriching stories of Myanmar that are both educational and entertaining. Sampan is adamant that innovative, responsible tourism can help Myanmar become not only a better place to visit but also a better place to live.

Responsibility

Sampan Travel strives to conduct responsible journeys, acutely conscious of the negative impacts of aggressive tourism. They attempt to tread as lightly as possible: engines are turned off when not in use and the rubbish generated is disposed of appropriately. Waste plastic is taken to the workshop Chu Chu to be transformed into gifts for future clients. Sampan’s tours are inclusive of the entirety of Myanmar: Burmese phrase cards are given to all guests, as are those for Shan, Kachin, and Karen dialects. Unsolicited visits to schools and orphanages are not facilitated and the entire Sales & Operations team is trained in child protection.

Business Case

Sampan Travel supports fellow responsible enterprises so to boost the social impact of their tours. For example, the Welcome Bags that each guest is presented with upon arrival are made by a self-help group for people living with HIV. The gifts inside are from various Myanmar-based enterprises such as Hla Day and Plan Bee that support marginalized groups and sustain cultural heritage. Socially responsible hotels and restaurants, such as Inle Heritage and Sanon, are supported so to generate greater benefits for Myanmar youth and reduce economic `leakage`. Travellers who wish to directly “give back” are connected with Sampan’s “Green Heroes” as seen on their website.
