Travel Experience

The eco-friendly Hillside Lodge is idyllically nestled in the Lao countryside, based on ecologically and socially sustainable principles. It's a nature retreat only 12 km from Luang Prabang, surrounded by protected area with primary forest, and yet escaping the city's hustle and bustle. Hillside is a family run and therefor family-friendly place offering authentic bungalows with a twist of style for only 20 guests. Set amidst a lush tropical garden, it's a heaven for a variety of beautiful butterflies. Reconnect yourself with nature in our small private paradise, discover undisturbed surroundings off the beaten track. Hillside offers, and that's unique in South East Asia, a variety of self-guided treks. On the day of arrival we will hand over a hiking map, which allows you easily to explore ethnic villages, waterfalls, rice paddies, viewpoints and traditional farmlands. Or you may prefer relax by the pool, read a book, savour our own organically grown food and pamper yourself with a steam bath and a massage while indulging in nature's beauty with astonishing views on forested mountain ranges.

Responsibility

Our Mission Is Based On Ecologically And Socially Sustainable Principles. It's not about window dressing. We care for our nature and the local communities. We coexist with nature that surrounds us and respect the Laotian culture. The contribution to ecological sustainability are as follow: 1) Our organic garden provides vegetables, salads and herbs for the kitchen, based on permaculture principles 2) We don’t use any pesticide or chemical fertilizers on the whole property (but are composting organic matters) Organic fertiliser (compost, horse and chicken dung) 3) Continuous planting – to encourage the local fauna population 4) We have a natural water source which we use to irrigate our garden 5) No chemicals to clean fresh water, we use natural sand and stone filters 6) We use septic tanks for wastewater 7) We use the cloudy water (in rainy season) from the nearby spring for toilet flushing 8) We change towels only every three days or when guests request 9) We try to reduce plastic waste as much as possible. For example plastic straws are banned at Hillside and replaced by reusable bamboo straws 10) For every guest the welcoming plastic water bottle will be refilled at any time, free of charge 11) Our free-range chickens provide breakfast eggs. Kitchen left overs won’t be thrown away but fed to our chickens and horses 12) Our construction material is mainly renewable and locally sourced 13) We contribute to nature and land conservation 14) Natural pest control is ONLY used to manage your bungalow, certified by WHO 15) Local sustainable timbers & materials harvested from our property or the surrounds where possible 16) Bamboo is grown onsite for construction purposes

Business Case

The contribution to social sustainability are as follow: 1) Our Lao staff is purely hired from our neighbouring villages to support them and their families by creating a source of income and a perspective 2) We employ 10 full time and 10 part time staff 3) We trained our local Lao staff to become professional waiters, cooks, gardeners and cleaners 4) Our wages are way above the recommended Government wage 5) Our staff choose their work days to allow to attend to ceremonies and family 6) We buy our supplies from local markets and communities whenever possible 7) For construction maintenance or reconstructions we also hire local workers 8) We support a school nearby by useful donations such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, books, pencils and other teaching or learning materials they need
