Travel Experience

Asian Captive Elephant Standards (ACES) is an independent body that assesses and audits elephant camps throughout Southeast Asia. Our goal is to ensure all elephant camps commit to the highest levels of elephant welfare possible. Our camp evaluation criteria have been designed and approved by some of the world’s leading Asian elephant veterinarians, researchers and experts. You can be assured that a camp with the ACES accreditation logo is a leading camp in elephant welfare, management and responsible travel principles.

Responsibility

Elephant-based tourism is a divisive and controversial segment of the Southeast Asian tourism market. Not all elephant camps treat their elephants well, and this reflects badly on the entire industry. Yet evidences shows that elephant tourism can be compatible with elephant welfare and conservation. An endangered species, the care and wellbeing of the Asian elephant has never been more critical. ACES is dedicated to lifting standards of elephant care for a sustainable future.

ACES ensures that elephant camps follow all aspects of the responsible travel ethos. This includes respecting the cultural tradition of mahoutship, present in most elephant range nations. ACES works together with camps, communities and elephant owners, as we know collaboration and teamwork provide the best outcomes for elephants and for the community as a whole. This is the foundation of responsible travel.

Business Case

Our research shows that international visitors to Southeast Asia are confused about which elephant camp to visit. No one wants an elephant to suffer for tourism, but visitors do not know whether the camp they are visiting is a quality camp or not. Having ACES camp accreditation provides international guests with a point of reference for excellence in elephant camp management. ACES accredited camps meet all national camp regulations, plus many more additional welfare standards expected by international visitors.

Camps can no longer afford to ignore the debate surrounding elephant welfare. Show visitors that you are a proactive, leading camp and undertake an ACES camp evaluation. International visitors to Southeast Asia will seek out your camp, as they trust the ACES brand as leaders in elephant camp quality and assessment.
