Officially celebrated on 16 July, this Buddhist festivity celebrates the day when the Buddha held his first sermon after his enlightenment to his first five disciples. An event that falls together with the arrival of the full moon on the sixth lunar month according to the Buddhist calendar. Mantras will fill the country’s hundreds of temples where particularly the first sermon of the Lord Buddha.
Don’t shy away to make it to one of the many temples in the evening either in Thailand or Laos (where is it called Boun Ork Phansa Day) – anyone is welcome to join in the ‘wian tian’, walking clockwise around the main shrine of the temple carrying a candle, incense sticks and lotus flowers.
