Destination Mekong, in partnership with the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office, will organize two separate but connected virtual events in October 2021:
- World Tourism Day – Mekong Innovations in Sustainable Tourism
- 2nd Destination Mekong Summit
The World Tourism Day event will be on Wednesday and Thursday 6-7 October 2021, and the 2nd Destination Mekong Summit will be held virtually on Thursday and Friday 21-22 October 21. The focus of the events would be to showcase the region, the work the public and private sector has done during COVID-19, and the innovations of small businesses to increase resilience and sustainability.
The 2nd Destination Mekong Summit event, chaired by Founder of Destination Mekong and outgoing Executive Director of the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office, under the theme of “Achieving a Balanced Tourism Recovery”, will have six country blocks, featuring social enterprise members of the Experience Mekong Collection of the respective countries, as well as thematic sessions inclding education, food tourism, wellness, culture, child protection, and wildlife conservation. moderated by members of the Destination Mekong Expert Groups. A regional panel will discuss the future of tourism in the Mekong Region post COVID-19 pandemic, including the release of the Mekong Tourism Recovery Communications Plan. The event will also feature the official hand-over from the current MTCO Executive Director of almost 8 years in office to his successor, recently appointed by the six tourism ministries of the GMS member countries. Split in two half days from 2-6pm (ICT), each day would be kicked off by an inspiring keynote. On day 1, His Eminence Shyalpa Tenzin Rinpoche, renowned Buddhist teacher and creator of the Universal Peace Sanctuary in Lumbini, entrusted. By the government of Nepal, will focus on importance of Balance, especially in light of preparing for a global tourism recovery and its implications. On day 2, Woody Wade, a respected author and futurist, will introduce the concept of scenario planning and how to look at future tourism recovery scenarios from various different angles. The event would feature the announcement of the winners of the 2021 Experience Mekong Showcases, and the Mekong Innovations in sustainable Tourism (MIST) program. Finally, the first Mekong Stories Book will be released at the end of the event, and all participants will receive a sneak preview and a free digital copy of this new landmark publication.
