The Royal Thai Navy together with maritime police and provincial administrators are preparing an operation to scoop a “garbage island” out of the Gulf of Thailand.

The captain of a fishing trawler this week discovered a 10-kilometre-long tideline of floating rubbish off the coast of Chumphon Province and posted photos on social media.

By the time national networks spread the story on Friday, the trash was less than seven kilometres away from Koh Talu Island and heading towards the resort areas (Hua Hin and Cha-Am) of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

The origin of the garbage island is not clear yet and is under investigation. It is thought that it was washed into the sea during the early-January floods in southern Thailand.
