Heritage Site Skills to
be Boosted
The MTO and UNESCAP will use funds pledged by the French government to
improve management of heritage sites in the Mekong region. The MTO aims
to run the first 'train the trainers' heritage site workshop by January.
The objective is to enhance onsite management skills to better preserve
and present historical and natural sites. The MTO and UNESCAP will call
for bids from consultancy firms qualified to train site managers and
local trainers. A workshop for current and future site managers and
trainers will be held in each of the Mekong destinations. MTO Executive
Director, Mr Stephen Yong (pictured), said: "It's imperative that we choose
heritage site managers and local trainers who are ready to take their
skills to the next level. Workshop attendees should be enthusiastic,
motivated and have good communication skills -- in English and their own
language."

Projects
Identified for Development
The Inception Workshop for the ADB Sustainable Tourism Development
Technical Assistance initiative was held in Kunming July 3. The meeting
was attended by representatives from the national and provincial tourism
offices of Cambodia, China, Lao PDR and Vietnam. The meeting identified
a series of public sector tourism projects in the four countries that
would be evaluated for a US$30-80 million ADB loan package for
implementation between 2008 and 2012. The ADB project team will
undertake field evaluations of the projects in Cambodia, Lao PDR and
Vietnam from July 4 to August 6. It will then work in the MTO office in
Bangkok August 6-12 to prepare an interim report. During the mission to
each country, the project team will hold consultations with project
stakeholders, visit up to 11 project sites, and undertake a national
workshop with stakeholders to provide feedback and ideas on the proposed
projects.

Vietnamese
Stability & Growth
A leading international business intelligence firm predicts that Vietnam
is on target to double its year 2000 GDP levels by 2010, a trend that
will bolster the country's fledgling domestic travel sector. Vietnam, it
says, is likely to enter the World Trade Organization by late 2006. Of
all the Mekong region countries the firm's analysts assessed Vietnam as
the least vulnerable to short-term political instability. On the tourism
side, PATA statistics show that international visitor arrivals to
Vietnam for the first five months this year grew 12% to 1.58 million,
compared to same period last year. Vietnam is targeting 3.7 million
tourists this year, an increase of 15%.
